Guidelines for Aligning a Youth Programme with Education for the Sustainable Development Goals

“Education for Sustainable Development is about empowering and motivating learners to become active sustainability citizens who are capable of critical thinking and able to participate in shaping a sustainable future.”
- Education for Sustainable Development Goals; Learning Objectives (UNESCO, 2017)

Education is a key factor in achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Scouting uses its non-formal education approach, the Youth Programme, to enable young people to be active global citizens that create a better world and contribute to the 2030 Agenda.

This document was created as a guide for National Scout Organisations and Scout leaders to use education for the Sustainable Development Goals in their Youth Programme.

This means asking some important questions: What are the most pressing issues in our country? How will we adapt the Youth Programme to equip Scouts with the competencies to tackle them? How can we make the learning environment Scouting offers more sustainable?

Discover in these guidelines practical guidance on why and how to create learning objectives for the SDGs, what learning opportunities can be added for scouts to learn about the goals, how other areas of Scouting can be aligned with the SDGs (governance, communications, partnerships, operations) as well as great practices from inside and outside of Scouting on education for the SDGs.

Make sure to also visit the Youth Programme service on the Services platform to find other great SDG resources and best practices !

These guidelines are part of Scouts for SDGs - an unprecedented mobilisation of our Movement that will see 50 million Scouts make the world’s largest coordinated youth contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
