Spirit of Unity
It was a place called Kirara Kama, in Yamaguchi, Japan, where more
than 33,000 Scouts from 150 countries, gathered to celebrate the 23rd
World Scout Jamboree.
The motto of this Jamboree was “Spirit of Unity”.
This would appear to be just one more commercial phrase, actually
represents an entire philosophy that is worth pondering.
Scouting with its 40 million people, today is a great example of how
in diversity can be in unity. Since the beginnings of Scouting invites
to join it to all races, all religions, all walks of life ... The dream of
Baden-Powell, to see gathered all scouts without distinction, becomes
reality day to day in each unit, in each scout group, in each NSO and as
superlative level at the World Scout Jamboree. It is in this great event
where all are present to introduce their culture, their customs, their
ideas, all in an effort to create a better world together.
It is true that people have their own perspective on life and because
of that Scouting is conceived differently. The difference of opinion is
the constant, hence the importance of being able to live, to remain in
unity, even though not always we agree in our ideas. This atmosphere
of dialogue between generations, between genders, between cultures,
between religions is what gives the Scout Movement this spirit of unity.
Something we cannot touch, you cannot buy in containers, but if we
can sense and feel when we give the opportunity to first understand
before seeking to be understood.
I’m quite sure that all we have been able to live this great experience in
Japan, we are now ambassadors of the Unity returning home spreading
this spirit that makes us promote dialogue and find ways forward
together, respecting our differences and recognizing more what we
have in common.
