Sponsored by FXB International, an NGO dedicated to combating poverty and the AIDS pandemic, World AIDS Orphans day will occur on 7 May. According to FXB, there are 15 million children orphaned as a result of AIDS. In addition to being especially vulnerable to all forms of exploitation, these children face financial difficulties, disease, and stigmatization.
World Health Day on 7 April marks an occasion to raise awareness of key global health issues and is celebrated on this date as it is the founding day of the World Health Organization (WHO). This year's theme is international health security. The aim of the Day is to urge governments, organizations and businesses to "Invest in health, build a safer future".
Bocconi University in Milan, Italy, recently hosted a special seminar on the topic “100 years of Scouting, 100 years of management.” In opening the presentation, Professor Elio Borgonovi from the University welcomed guests and spoke about the similarities between an international educational institution like Bocconi, and a Movement like World Scouting.
Geneva, Switzerland - Today at the UN, World Scouting presented a joint statement with the World Alliance of YMCAs to the 4th Session of the Human Rights Council. Held from 12th-30th March 2007, the Council is a forum to debate the promotion and protection of human rights around the world. Today's agenda covered topics including mercenaries, economic policies and education in relation to human rights.
From water quality testing in Japan, tree planting in Mexico to clean up campaigns in Algeria, Scouts have been involved in a wide range of projects for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) World Environment Day, which is celebrated annually on the 5th of June.
The theme for World Environment Day 2007 is Climate Change, which impacts each and every one of us around the world.
Educating young people to become leaders not followers is a core function of Scouting, and has become the focus of a huge campaign that has been launched across Ireland. This campaign uses giant billboards to highlight a number of stories from around the world plus two local stories of Irish Scout Groups who have traveled to foreign locations and made a difference.
Celebrated on 8 March, International Women's Day (IWD) is the global day connecting all women around the world and inspiring them to achieve their full potential. And although gender equality has progressed enormously over the past century, some countries and organisations still treat women unfairly, thus presenting the need for youth involvement to create a better world. World Scouting encourages initiatives like IWD to both celebrate the achievements of women as well as raise social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide.
The Governance Review Task Force (GRTF) has held their first meeting since the appointment of David Bull as Chairman. With all members present, the meeting took place in Geneva on the 10th - 11th February, 2007. The discussions focused on defining the context of the task force's work, reviewing progress so far, and setting specific objectives for the work to be carried out.
His Majesty King Carl Gustaf XVI of Sweden, Honorary President of the World Scout Foundation, this week visited Sarcelles, France to meet with a group of local Scouts (aged between 18-25) and get a first-hand view of the social impact of Scouting by the Scouts and Guides of France. In the theme of the Centenary, it was on this occasion that the King of Sweden gave them a certificate officially recognising their project as a 'Gift for Peace'.
Every year in the UK to mark the occasion of Founder's Day, a special service is held at Westminster Abbey on the first Saturday following the 22nd of February.
