Steve broke the record!
Bournemouth, 11th February 2006 - Steve Fossett, a real Scout, broke a new world record: on board the Globalflyer, he flew further than any other aircraft in history. On Saturday he made an unscheduled arrival at Bournemouth airport, United Kingdom - as he made an emergency landing.
All the Scouts around the world are proud of their World Scout Committee member.
Just after midday on Wednesday (12:00 UTC) at the NASA Kennedy Space Centre, Steve Fossett finally began his attempt to fly an aircraft further than any other flight in history.
Steve was scheduled to depart early yesterday morning, but a final check of the aircraft revealed a fuel leak and caused the late abandonment of the launch just thirty minutes before take off.
In the aftermath of the sudden change of plan, Steve commented: "This is obviously very disappointing news for the whole project team. As anyone knows who undertakes challenges of this nature there are always obstacles to overcome, whether it is the weather or mechanical issues."
But only twenty-four hours later, the fuel tank has been fixed, and in true Scouting style, Steve has taken the setback in his stride and successfully begun his journey towards the record books.
