Africa Regional Office launches ASPIA, a peace initiative

On Friday 13th July 2007, the Africa Scout Regional Office launched the ''Africa Scout Peace Initiative Award'' ASPIA in a ceremony that took place at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre, KICC, in Nairobi.

Participants to the event ranged from diplomats, representatives of the Kenya Scouts Association and WAGGGS, corporate organizations, UN representatives and the media. The chief guest was veteran top diplomat H.E. Ambassador Bethuel Kiplagat, whose wife, Mrs Honorine Kiplagat – an executive of WAGGGS, was also present. Another special guest was Paola Cervo, a volunteer and one of the driving forces behind the Amahoro Amani Project. Paola, made a presentation on the said project in a form of Powerpoint and a short video. Amahoro Amani became the first laureate of the ASPIA after Paola received the award during the same ceremony. The chief guest reiterated the importance of networking and exhorted participants to rally behind the Scouts, in this noble initiative, that aims to recognize successful peace projects in the Africa Region. Amahoro was awarded for being the biggest peace project thus far by Scouts and Guides in Africa in addition to being a pertinent ''Gift for Peace '' to Scouting as the movement turns a 100 years old. In addition Amahoro Amani's relevance lies in the fact that, it is targeting a region that has a history of civil strife, i.e. the Great Lakes. The Regional Director, Rubina M. Haroon in her remarks, emphasised the values of Scouting and demonstrated their relevance towards the realization of long-lasting peace in the region. ARO's Unit Manager, Great Lakes sub-region, Jacques Sandrizi, during the vote of thanks, expressed his gratitude to participants and ARO staff for making the day such as success.
