The Kenya Scouts Association’s National Youth Representatives, Grace Michuki and Nelson Opany, have mobilised Scouts and young people in Kenya to join the Messengers of Peace (MoP) Kenya Chapter. Grace also happens to be the current Chairperson of the Africa Youth Forum. This launching of the Kenya Chapter of the MoP was successfully done by Nelson and Grace through the social media, both on Facebook and Twitter. The two were trained to be MoP Global Network’s coordinators during the 6th Africa Scout Jamboree that took place in Burundi (July 2012). During this training Grace and Nelson got inspired to start the Kenyan chapter of MoP Global Network that is part of the global initiative of Messengers of Peace, a flagship initiative by the World Organization of the Scout Movement.
From the 26th to 29th September 2012, during the National Scout Youth Forum, Grace and Nelson conducted a training that brought together 41 other Rover Scouts from across the country with the objective of introducing them to MoP and to show them as to how Rover Scouts across the country could get involved in spreading the peace message with their own local grassroots level initiatives. The training sessions were also supported and partly facilitated by Jonathan Omondi and Mary Waweru from the World Scout Bureau - Africa Regional Office.
With the Kenyan general elections fast approaching this training provided an appropriate opportunity for young people in Scouting to position themselves to play the role of Messengers of Peace, before, during and after the elections to contribute positively in averting possible violence fuelled by ethnic tensions and political inclinations, which are still fresh in Kenyans’ memory from the deadly violence that broke out in the aftermath of the previous elections in 2007. Grace, Nelson and the Rover Scouts who came to the training are now moving forward with recruiting other Rover Scouts and young people to become Messengers of Peace, with a pledge "I am not my tribe" and a call for "Peace in Diversity".
