Crew 87 "Sorting and Packing Medical Supplies for Countries in Need"

7. Ene 2013

Our Crew performed a service project in conjunction with a nonprofit organization called MedShare.  MedShare has a network of hospitals and medical providers in the Atlanta, Georgia area and also in Southern California.  They place recycle barrels at various locations to collect perfectly good medical equipment, materials, and supplies that otherwise would be discarded.  Our group spent a total of 176 man hours packaging 493 boxes of supplies destined for 5 countries; Haiti, Nicaragua, Turkey, Niger, and Congo.  We also saved approximately 2,500 pounds of materials from being wastefully disposed of at area sanitary landfills.  Not one person walked away from this project without being changed in a positive manner.  Crew 87 will continue to work with MedShare in the future.  Our goal is assist MedShare in extending their collection network.  Our group touched on all three dimensions of Messenger's of Peace service:

Community-Our efforts will help save lives around the world
Environmental-2,500 pounds of materials were saved from the landfill
Personal-the experience has motivated and inspired our group to do bigger and more complex projects on a regular basis.

There is no better feeling than selflessly helping someone in need.  The important things in life are put into perspective.  Crew 87 walked away from this project fulfilled, inspired, and motivated.  Most of all we are proud to be Scouts!
