In the aftermath of the deadly earthquake that struck multiple regions in Morocco on 8 September, the Fédération Nationale du Scoutisme Marocain has taken quick and decisive action to aid in disaster response and relief operations.

More than 2,100 people were killed when a magnitude-6.8 tremor shook an isolated mountain area south of Marrakesh, causing widespread destruction and leaving many trapped beneath the debris.

Scouts swiftly established a dedicated emergency team at the national level to coordinate and manage their interventions effectively. They called on volunteers to contribute to the relief efforts and also appealed to Moroccan and international organisations to assist in rescue operations.

The National Scout Organisation (NSO), through its affiliated Scout associations, plans to mobilise 2,000 volunteers, including leaders, youth, and scouts in the field and at the organisational level. Among them are 50 people trained in mental health, 50 in relief and first aid, 200 in educational and teaching support, and 50 in Safe from Harm.

Dedicated Scout volunteers have already mobilised in local communities and areas impacted by the devastation, launching appeals to collect vital supplies, such as medicine, clothes, food, and blankets. Many Scouts also took part in blood donation drives, assisted in transporting injured victims to safety, and provided shelter to families who lost their homes in the violent earthquake.

A few days before the earthquake struck, the NSO held a disaster rescue and response training session in collaboration with the Moroccan Red Crescent, bolstering their ability to respond quickly and effectively in such challenging circumstances.

Through the Scout Donation Platform, the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) and the World Scout Foundation (WSF) have launched a global appeal for funds to support relief efforts by Scouts in Morocco. Every donation - no matter how small - can make a big difference to those affected by the devastating earthquake, so please consider contributing to this earthquake appeal. Supporting these efforts, WOSM and WSF already made available USD 10,000 in emergency funding.

Amid the chaos and devastation, a story of resilience and unity has emerged with Scouts coming together, demonstrating their solidarity and compassion to assist those in need.
