Scouts from Paraguay and Brazil win Volvo Adventure awards for environmental projects

Scout groups from Paraguay and Brazil have won the winner and runner up positions respectively in the 2012 Volvo Adventure – international environment award competitions held in Gotenborg, Sweden. ‘Chake Dengue - beware of dengue’ by Paraguay Scouts (Grupo Scout Mangore) won them the first prize of 10,000 USD and ‘Wash and return of pesticide packaging’ by Brazilian Scouts (Grupo Escoteiro Tupinambás) got a 2nd prize of 6,000 USD. The Volvo Adventure - in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) - is an educational programme that rewards environmental activities and the decision-makers of the future.

Through the World Scout Environment Programme (WSEP), World Scouting has set the direction for environment education in the Movement to be implementation by National Scout Organizations throughout the world and provides a clear platform for engaging with partners. Over the years, Volvo Adventure has partnered with World Scouting to reward environmental projects undertaken by the Scouts between the ages of 13 – 16 from around the world.

Scouting has many outstanding examples of youth-led environment projects from around the world, which demonstrate how Scouts are contributing in practical ways to 'Creating a Better World' through environment protection and leading sustainable lives. Volvo Adventure recognizes environmental projects from around the world and has opened a special opportunity for Scouts to receive help in preparing and delivering their environment projects.

Similarly, World Scouting has opened another window of opportunity for a dual benefit through the Scouts of the World Programme. The programme helps to empower young adults to understand the global changes of the environment, peace and development and to make a contribution towards addressing them. Scouts are known to work with other organizations to develop a diverse range of projects to meet the needs of the community. In this regard, the top 10 environment projects that will qualify for the international finals every year will automatically be awarded the Scouts of the World Award certificate by the World Organization of the Scout Movement.
