“5th of June – My Day” – Cub Scout Year in Serbia
The Scout Organization of Serbia in cooperation with Green list of Serbia organized a national Cub Scout event called “5th of June – My Day” in the capital city of Belgrade and celebrated the World Environment Day.
With over 500 Cub Scouts, 150 leaders and more than 100 volunteers from all over Serbia, this was the biggest Scout event of the year. With 2010 being declared as “Cub Scout Year” by our National Scout Organization, this event was intended to be the crown jewel of the season.
The opening ceremony was held in the city’s central square, during which participants formed the “Recycle” sign. After the ceremony, all Scouts and volunteers joined together and took a stroll down the central pedestrian street, toward Belgrade fortress. At the fortress, Scouts participated in a variety of workshops and games dedicated to environmental issues and renewable energy resources. Some of the workshops included singing of Scout songs, experiencing problems caused by the destruction of wetland habitats, managing natural resources, learning to use all our senses in solving problems, learning to trust each other, recycle basketball, detecting waste scattered throughout nature, learning the benefits of the recycling etc. To make things even more interesting, a group of jugglers was performing at one of the workshops. The whole fortress was one big happy place, colourful and shiny, full of inquiring little people, eager to learn new things and show their abilities. During the closing ceremony all Scouts formed giant “fleur de lis” sign, the international Scouting symbol.
The Cub Scouts were thrilled and spent a truly remarkable day. We had numerous guests and friends who came to show their support and help to make this event happen. We are starting a new tradition and will make sure that next year’s event is bigger and more interesting. Who knows, maybe it will be an international Cub Scout event! With our imagination, motivation and free spirit everything is possible!
