World Scout Environment Programme inspires 300 environmental initiatives for Georgian Scouts

In less than two years after adopting the World Scout Environment Programme, Sakartvelos Skauturi Modzraobis Organizatsia (the Georgian Organization of the Scout Movement) has seen a high rise in environmental activities amongst its young members. Scouts in Georgia have already implemented more than 300 small-scale environmental projects chosen from activities described in the World Scout Environment Programme toolkit.

Scouts who lead the activities in their communities have got T-shirts printed with the WSEP logo on it. This is how much they have begun to love this Programme. Since June 2010 the Georgian Organization of the Scout Movement has been successfully implementing the World Scout Environmental Programme in the framework of the Youth Capacity Building Project at Western Route Export Pipelines (YCBP) initiated and funded by British Petroleum.

One of the core approaches adopted by the Programme in Georgia is targeting young people in the 13-16 age group and equipping them with the necessary leadership skills, life skills, understanding of key personal development needs and supporting their understanding of the basics in entrepreneurship skills. Scouts have established such Youth Groups in 44 target schools of 15 different districts of Georgia. More than 1000 students have already joined the Groups and shown interest in implementing the World Scout Environmental Programme activities.

In order to facilitate the process, the Georgian Organization of the Scout Movement has translated the WSEP into Georgian language, trained 2 Scouts from each Youth Group on leadership and introduced them to the WSEP. World Scouting congratulates Georgian Scouts on their achievements as we celebrate World Environment Day 2012 in Scout Groups around the world this weekend, and as we prepare for the upcoming Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development.
