International Gathering for Peace

The International Forum for Peace represents the final phase of the “Amahoro Amani” project, and it aims at strengthening the exchange of experiences between young people, on a broader level, regional and international one. It comes within the framework of the two-year project who's main purpose is to foster a movement of rejection of ethnic prejudices among young people and getting them to contribute concretely to social change for a lasting peace advent in the Great Lakes region (Burundi, Rwanda, The Democratic Republic of The Congo). Amahoro is also a project that aims at developing the “international solidarity” dimension among the young people from the South and their peers from industrialised countries.

In order to evaluate the different activities realised during the first two years of this project, to share and compare the experiences of the young Community Mediators, more than 650 young people are going to meet together during an International Gathering for Peace from the 30th of July to the 4th of August in Burundi.

During the 6 days, the young people will take part to different kinds of activities, each one with a particular and meaningful message implied. The thematic issues will be focused mainly around Peace Promotion, but also on Human Rights, Gender, Health, Environment and Communication. Amahoro Amani is also a “Gifts for Peace” project which promotes the Centenary of Scouting.

Those attending the event will include 420 (15-25 years old) young Community Mediators of the Amahoro Amani project, from the three countries of the Great Lakes region, 42 Trainers of the community mediators, 62 young people from other countries, members of the partner Associations (Uganda, Kenya, France, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Finland, Denmark…), 60 young Burundian, Rwandan and Congolese people in charge of welcoming the young hosts and developing with them several micro projects of community development, 25 representatives from the scouting and guiding Associations of the region and 42 hosts.

This International Gathering for Peace will be preceded by the Peace Caravans, which will be organised and held successively in South Kivu(DRC), North Kivu(DRC), Rwanda and in Burundi.
