Australian Rovers Celebrate Peace Boomerang's Journey
Australia, July 11th 2006 - After a journey of over 18,000 km around Australia, a Peace Boomerang has completed its journey spreading the message of peace and unity in the lead up to Scouting's Centenary.
Australian Rovers wanted to develop a Gift for Peace project that would involve Rovers, Scouts and the general public and raise awareness of this important issue and generate discussions amongst young people about peace.
The boomerang, an Australian Aboriginal wooden ceremonial tool, returns to the person who throws it, thus making it a fitting symbol as it traveled for 18 months around Australia. Logbooks accompanied the boomerang, allowing people to write their thoughts on peace, and share their photographs and stories of the adventures the boomerang had whilst in their care. The four logbooks were signed by many people, including the Governor General of Australia, past Governor General of Australia, His Majesty the King of Sweden and Her Majesty the Queen of Sweden, Parliamentarians and Councilors, Scouts of every section in Australia as well as the general community.
A celebration dinner was held on the 24th of June, in Sydney, in order to share the stories and
recognise the achievements of the boomerang. The Peace Boomerang not only raised the profile of Scouting amongst the community as it traveled the country, but it also captured the attention of television, radio and print media along the way. The boomerang and logbooks will now be used throughout 2006 & 2007 to promote Scouting’s Centenary both in Australia and around the world respectively.
