The Emotion Relay
Aim of the Game: To be the first group to pass on a specific expression from the first person through the last person in line.
Learning Objectives:
• To observe different facial expressions and assume the appropriate emotion.
• To accurately convey messages through expressions.
Structure:
Two or three groups in a line (depending on the number of persons)
Time:
15-30 minutes
Materials:
Ten numbered small strips of paper with the following words written on them:
1. Happy
2. Frustrated
3. Sad
4. Furious
5. Shocked
6. Shy
7. Calculating
8. Boastful
9. Irritated
10. Fearful
Method:
• Lay down the strips of paper on the floor or put them on the board and explain to the Scouts that these are ten different emotions.
• Explain how the game will work: it is a relay game and everyone else in the line turns their back from the board except the first person in line.
• The first persons in each line come forward and you will show them a number. Then they read the corresponding emotion and try to simulate a facial expression that best represents the emotion.
• As soon as you give the signal, they run back to their respective lines (groups) and tap the back of the next person and shows his/her the facial expression.
• This person then taps the back of the next person who then receives the same facial expression until the last person gets it.
• The last person runs to the front, and chooses an emotion from the board or floor that he/she thinks corresponds to the facial expression he/she received.
• The first line or group that gets the correct emotion wins a point.
• Repeat the game for five or more rounds and then ask the Scouts to form a big circle before discussing the experience.
Evaluation:
• What can you say about the game?
• How did you guess the emotion?
• What do we need to see in another person to be able to discern what he or she is feeling?
• How important is it for you to be able to know how someone else feels? Why?
