Scouts around the world are joining hands together this week to strengthen global forces against the number one cause of death for young people, road accidents. Annually, over 1.2 million people die on roads in a cause that can easily be tackled with joined up action. The Second UN Global Road Safety Week (every five years) is taking place from 6 to 12 May 2013. On 6 and 7 May, 30 Rover Scouts and leaders from 14 countries came together for a series of events at the United Nations premises in Geneva on the invitation of Scouting Ireland, Scouts of Greece and the Greek-Hellenic Road Safety Institute ‘Panos Mylonas’. The events were supported and hosted by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). 2011 to 2020 is also the ‘Decade of Action for Road Safety’ promoted by the United Nations.

The World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) welcomes South Sudan as its latest member. The membership became official on 1 May 2013. The National Scout Organization, South Sudan Scout Association will be ceremonially welcomed at the 40th World Scout Conference in Slovenia (2014). World Scouting is one of the first global youth organisations to accept the full memebrship of South Sudan

Bangladesh Scouts mobilized Rovers and Leaders in finding survivors after an eight-storey building collapsed in Savar, Bangladesh on 24th April 2013 which claimed over 300 lives and severely injured hundreds of others. Death toll is expected to rise for many are still missing.

The 54th JOTA had its theme activities centered around emergency radio services. the theme material that was used before and during the weekend is available for you here in the library. It is still up to date and can be used for an exciting weekend programme with your Scouts.

The 16th Jamboree On The Internet will take place on 20 and 21 October 2012.

The 21st World Scout Jamboree was an amazing experience, made even more special because it took place in 2007 – the Centenary of Scouting. We had the privilege of leading the planning, preparation and organisation of the Jamboree, but there is no doubt in our minds that it was only with the enthusiasm and huge efforts of many others – too numerous to list here – that nearly 30,000 young people had a ‘once in a lifetime’ experience.

In Scouting, youth empowerment is, simultaneously, the purpose (our Mission), the educational approach (our Method) and the aimed result (the individual development process of each scout that allows him or her to become an adult self-fulfilled as individual and playing a constructive role in society).

After five years, it was felt appropriate to review the guidelines and procedures relating to its use and licensing. We looked at what might be done to promote increased legitimate use of our brands by member organizations, whilst continuing to uphold the relevant resolutions of the World Scout Conference and decisions of the World Scout Committee. We also considered how to simplify licensing arrangements as they are applied to all designs used to promote WOSM's activities and programmes with the goal of removing any perceived barriers to their non-commercial use by our member organizations. This circular presents the results of the review and explains the new licensing arrangements.

Since the earthquake of January 2010, Haitians Scouts are mobilising to assist the affected population. Through this documentary production realised by Scouts and Guides of France and the National Association of Scouts of Haiti, Fabrizio Scapin, director of the film captures the experience of young scouts mobilized for their country.

He shows us true scouting embodied by these children, who, beyond their capacity for action, have shown a commitment and a sense of exemplary service to their community.
