International Day of Peace calls for global ceasefire
September 21st is the International Day of Peace and this year the United Nations, with the support of all member countries, agreed that it be observed as a Global Ceasefire and day of peace and non-violence. The Countdown To Peace - an International countdown to Peace Day - was launched on June 13, 2003.
Individuals, families, communities, cities, states and nations around the world are joining together to try to create a true day of peace. They are pledging to find ways to share the spirit of peace in their homes, in their communities and between nations on that Day and during the Countdown To Peace. If the world can live in peace for one day, we can learn to solve our problems peacefully together, one day at a time.
World Scouting, as it prepares to move into its second century as the leading global youth Movement, is committed to building a culture of peace. In particular, through the international campaign Gifts for Peace. This issue lies at the heart of Scouting's mission. Since it was first established, the question of peace and peace education has always been Scouting's main concern, and especially that of its founder, Lord Baden-Powell, who declared: "Peace can never be fully guaranteed by commercial interests, military alliances, general disarmament or bilateral treaties if the spirit of peace is not present in the hearts and desires of people."
The International Day of Peace is an opportunity for Scouts around the world to honour their pledge to create a better world, by urging governments, communities and individuals to enact a global ceasefire and bring us all one-step closer to world peace!
