Saudi Scouts Help With the Hajj
February, 2005
More than 2 million Muslim pilgrims are in Saudi Arabia for the annual Hajj. The Hajj requires visits to Mecca, Mina, and Arafat where rituals must be performed along the steps of the journey. Every Muslim strives to make this pilgrimage at least once in his or her life time.
This year, Television 4 in the UK reports that there are 4,000 Scouts helping the pilgrims, and that thanks to them - and a new computer system - the number of lost pilgrims appears to be less than the 10,000 who needed assistance to find their way each day in previous years. In Mina, where there are 57,000 tents, and more than 20,000 busses to transport people, getting lost is easy.
Last year it was reported that Saudi Scouts provided over 73,000 individual acts of service - ranging from simply helping a lost pilgrim find his/her way, to more significant acts of providing first aid and other emergency services.
