Bhutan’s First National Jamboree

Six years after becoming member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement in 1999, Bhutan Scouts Association (BSA) organized its very first national Jamboree in Damphu, Tsirang from 31 January to 6 February 2007. Around 400 Scouts participated from all 20 districts of Bhutan. Today there are about 20,000 Scouts in the country.

The Jamboree celebrates the centenary of Scouting, at the same time, a preparation for a bigger national Jamboree in 2008 in time for the coronation of the 5th King, the 100 years of Bhutan Monarchy, and its transition to democracy.
A Scout participant describes the activities as unique and most challenging such as the adventure valley where they went through 20 difficult bases and felt very satisfied after completing the task. Another activity, the amazing race, led them to race for ten kilometers while solving problems and decoding messages.
At the Jamboree, among the Bhutanese key leaders are the President of Scout Council and Minister of Education Lyonpo Thinley Gyamtsho and the dynamic new Director of the Youth Department Sonam Tabgay Dorji. Joining them from overseas is former World Scout Committee member Hartmut Keyler, key leaders from the Danish Scouts and Guide Association and Asia-Pacific Regional Director Abdullah Rasheed.
