What is a Podcast/Podcasting?

A podcast is a digital audio or video file that is part of a series, downloadable, programme-driven, mainly with a host and/or theme, and convenient, usually via an automated feed with computer software.
Podcasting is a term that was devised as a crisp way to describe the technology used to promote audio content from websites to consumers who typically listen to the information on their iPod (hence the "pod") or other audio player that supports mp3 at their convenience. This technology can be used to promote any kind of file including software updates, pictures, and videos.

What makes podcasting special is that it allows individuals to publish (podcast) radio shows that interested listeners can subscribe to. Before podcasting you could record a radio show and put it on your website. Now people can automatically receive new shows without having to go to a specific site to download it.

How to use them?

In order to subscribe for a podcast, you need an internet connection and podcast software which is usually available free of charge. Once you have installed this software, it will check the location you specify as your podcast feed for new episodes of your chosen podcast series and automatically download them. You can then listen to podcast episodes on your computer, or transfer them to a portable device, such as an mp3 player.
