Volunteer Action Counts – a campaign by United Nations Volunteers (UNV)

Volunteering is a key aspect in Scouting, not just the adult volunteers contributing to achieving the Scout Mission by supporting the education of children and youth in our Movement, but also all the young volunteers doing the countless good deeds as part of their daily Scouting activities. With over 7 million adult volunteers and millions of other young volunteers, Scouting is definitely one of the leading volunteer organisations in the world. For this reason and more, United Nations Volunteers (UNV), is one of the key partners of WOSM. The UNV programme is the UN organization that promotes volunteerism to support peace and development worldwide. World Scouting is hence happy to support this excellent initiative by UNV – Volunteer Action Counts, to help make all volunteer actions (small and big) in the area of sustainable development count at Rio+20.

Rio+20 as it is famously known, stands for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development to be held in Rio de Janeiro city (Brazil), 20-22 June 2012. Rio+20 is a great opportunity to show global leaders what people care most about. Volunteers can make their actions count by sharing their story virtually via the campaign website or its social media platforms! These testimonials will be showcased at the summit in June in a multi-media presentation.

The campaign gives volunteers along with communities and organizations like World Scouting, a chance to show what everyone is doing for the future of our planet and generations to come.

Scout volunteers, young people and adults alike, who are doing small to big actions in any of the below areas can register their volunteer actions and mention Scouting as part of their message when they submit their action. The areas of interest for Rio+20 could be:

  • Strengthening your community
  • Fighting poverty and hunger
  • Improving social inclusion
  • Saving and providing clean water
  • Access to energy and renewable resources
  • Resilience and disaster preparedness
  • Better health-care
  • Improving education and livelihoods
  • Protecting the environment
  • Promoting peace and justice

The results of all these volunteer actions will be presented to the States, Civil society, Media and economic world Representatives at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, Rio+20 in Brazil. A multi-media presentation will showcase the counted voices of volunteers worldwide to the over 50,000 people participating at the summit. The campaign will make all volunteer actions count at Rio+20!
