Scouting's Sunrise & The Jamboree- how to watch the action!
The 21st World Scout Jamboree opens in only a few days and Scouting's Sunrise, 1st August is therefore just around the corner! Find out how you can follow all the excitement of these events. Here all of your questions are answered!
What options are available for accessing footage of the Jamboree Opening Ceremony and Scouting's Sunrise Ceremony?
There will be two live programmes produced, one of each ceremony. These will be uplinked live onto a number of satellites and can be accessed globally provided you are able to downlink the footage. It is likely that this can only be done in conjunction with a national broadcaster or a major Teleport. The footage will be uplinked onto the satellite at no cost to NSOs, however, the downlink cost is at the expense of anyone who wishes to access it.
The two ceremonies are available at the following times: (ALL TIMES ARE GMT)
Saturday 28 July: Opening Ceremony LIVE from Hylands Park at 12.15 GMT
Transmission: 11:55 to 13:10 GMT
Programme: 12:15 to 13:00 GMT (45 minute duration)
Wednesday 1 August: Sunrise Ceremony LIVE from Brownsea Island at 07:00 GMT
Transmission: 06:20 – 07:35 (37 minute window)
Programme: 06:45 – 07:23 (37 minute window)
Additional Footage
The World Scout Bureau will be uploading 5 Broadcast Standard video clips from the Jamboree site. These will be can be used by any NSO or news team for broadcast.
The transmission times for these programmes will be available here shortly.
Can I access the footage through my dish at home?
The signals are not on a Direct to Home Service, so it is unlikely that you will be able to receive them. The footage will be uploaded onto global satellites, which generally can only be accessed by broadcasters or major teleports. Any NSO interested in accessing the footage should contact their local/national broadcaster / teleport about accessing the footage on their behalf.
The satellites being used are:
Eutelsat W1 for Europe and the Middle East
Atlantic Bird 3 for Africa
Asiasat 2 for Asia and Australasia
Intelsat 3 for the Americas
Exact parameters are available here.
Do I have to pay to use the footage?
No. The footage itself is free, but its use must be correctly credited. It will however cost to access and downlink from the satellite.
How much is this likely to be?
The world is covered by different satellites covering different regions and each country will have a different cost for downlinking the footage. Some broadcasters may wish to use the footage for their own media purposes and put it on television and will therefore cover the cost. Others may not. In this case, NSOs may offer to cover the costs of accessing the footage, and have the broadcaster purely downlink on their behalf. It will be a one-off cost to downlink the footage, so it can be shared within the country.
I have heard the Community Channel UK will show the Ceremonies?
Some of you may have heard about the Community Channel and been given a link to watch the ceremonies. BUT- This is purely a UK TV channel and can only be accessed by people with Sky (UK) and Virgin Media (UK). IT WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE GLOBALLY AND IS NOT AVAILABLE TO WATCH ON THE WEB. Some people within Europe have Sky TV and can access the Community Channel but this is not guaranteed. For those who do have it, these are the channels: Sky 539 • Virgin TV 233 • Freeview 87 (6-9am). The UK Community Channel will present live coverage of the key events of the Jamboree, and will also broadcast regular updates from Mon 30 July.
What about those of us who do not live in the UK and don't have access to SKY?
