Maria Corazon Buala, 19, of the Philippines addresses the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly, at UNHQ.

UN Study on Violence against Children launched

Every seat was filled in the room of the third committee of the UN General Assembly as the United Nations Secretary-General's Study on Violence against Children was launched in New York on 11th October 2006.

There were many experts that spoke, but the most impressive was the young representative Maria Corazon Buala who received a standing ovation. She spoke on behalf of all the young people who were present and who had been part of the process of the report. She also urged governments to implement the recommendations in the report and to be all inclusive of children and young people in their decisions.

In addition to the Secretary-General's report to the General Assembly, a book called World Report on Violence against Children was launched.

On October 12th materials just for children and young people were launched. The two publications are entitled:

  • United Nations Secretary-General's Study on Violence against Children. Adapted for Children and Young People. (Download)
  • Our Right to be Protected from Violence Activities Learning and Taking Action for Children and Young People. (Download)

Both are designed to provide children and young people over the age of twelve, with information about violence and ideas for actions they can take to prevent violence, and respond to it. WOSM was especially involved in contributing to the activity guide, and case-study based stories have been included, featuring Scout projects from Egypt, Namibia, and El Salvador. A WOSM representative was part of the writing group and Scouts participated in field testing the materials.

These publications can be downloaded by going to the study web-site:
