Founder's Day 22 February 2007
Geneva, Switzerland - Thursday, February 22, is Founder's Day and this year marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Lord Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Scout movement, and the centenary of Scouting worldwide.
Coincidentally, Baden-Powell shared his birthday with his wife, Olave, who later became World Chief Guide. Together, B-P and his wife inspired and transformed the lives of many millions of young people around the world.
In 2007, Founder's Day will be celebrated by nearly 38 million Scouts and Guides across the world in a variety of different ways from centenary camps, galas and parades, to the simple gesture of renewing their Scout promise.
At the headquarters of World Scouting, in Geneva, Switzerland, Eduardo Missoni, Secretary General of the World Organization of the Scout Movement has sent out a message to all Scouts across the globe encouraging the Movement to appreciate its history, and look together toward the future as Scouting stands at the dawn of a new century. He states: “Renewing our Promise today, we should not only look at the past with gratitude to B-P, and to all those who opened for us “the road to success”, giving us the opportunity to live the unique, exciting and involving experience that is Scouting. We should also look with optimism and courage toward the future, with the fleur-de-lys and our promise firmly guiding us in the direction of creating a better world.”
