Fifth update: APR Rover Peace Baton journey
The Asia-Pacific Region Rover Peace Baton had so far completed its journey in 19 countries including Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Pakistan, Maldives, Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Mongolia, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Macau, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Singapore, getting the participation of over 50,000 Scouts since it started in August 2006. See below its different adventures as it continues to visit different countries before heading to the Philippines this coming March for its grand celebration.
Route One
Peace reigned along the Wutung border, an Indonesia's Papua province, as Scouts of Papua New Guinea (PNG) officially handed over the Peace Baton to Gerakan Pramuka/ Indonesia on 1 December 2006. In a simple handover ceremony, a billboard bearing the message of peace was signed by the Governor of Papua and the relay continued to Jayapura where thousands of Scouts, Rovers and Leaders welcomed the baton.
From Jayapura, it was taken by plane to Manokwari where it was welcomed by thousands of Scouts, Rovers and Leaders, waving the WOSM and Gerakan Pramuka flags and took the Peace Baton to the office of the Major Manokwari District and to the office of the Governor. At the Governor’s office, located at the compound of Irian Jaya Barat, a campfire was held, where the Governor led thousands of people in signing the billboard in support for their peace campaign in Indonesia.
From Manokwari, the Peace Baton traveled to Makassar by plane and visited the Vice-Governor of Sulawesi Selatan for the formal handover from Irian Jaya Barat. After the handover, Scouts, Rovers and Leaders traveled by bus at the city of Makassar. Giving more impact to the event was the participation of about 200 members of Makassar Thunder Bike who joined the relay.
After Makassar, the Peace Baton proceeded to Indonesia's capital city of Jakarta, where it was welcomed by the National Committee members of Gerakan Pramuka and thousands of Scouts who gathered at the airport to personally see the arrival of the baton.
In Jakarta, the peace baton made several visits particularly to the different historical places in the city, one of these was the Proclamation Monument. Like its previous relays the peace baton relay here was as successful as its previous relays as thousands of Scouts and dignitaries supported the event and signed the billboard.
After Indonesia, the peace baton was turned over to Singapore where it equally gathered support and toured different parts of Singapore. On the 17th of December 2006, Singapore officially handed over the Peace Baton to Malaysia and the simple handover was witnessed by Dr Mohammed Mukhyuddin Bin Sarwani, Chairman of the Scouting Profile Sub Committee and Hj Radzwan Bin Hussain, Member of the Finance Sub Committee.
As scheduled, Malaysia will handover the Peace Baton to Brunei on the last week of January and Brunei will likewise handover the Peace Baton to the Philippines on the first week of February.
Route Two
From India, the Peace Baton proceeded to Bhutan on 15 November 2006. With the presence of hundreds of sacred monasteries, showing the deep spirituality of Bhutanese people, the ultimate goal of the Rover Peace Baton was deeply felt as the relay in the country started.
Starting point of the relay was in Alipu Duar border and from there the baton visited the districts of Chukha, Punakha, Wangdue, Phuntsholing and Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan.
In Thimphu, labeled as the smallest capital in the world, the baton was welcomed by the the President of Bhutan Scouts, the Minister of Education and the outgoing Chief Commissioner Mr. Kinley Dorji and incoming Chief Commissioner Dasho Sonam Tobgay joined the Executive Members of Thimphu District Scouts Association.
Being Bhutan's gallery of traditional Bhutanese art, architecture, culture, and tradition, the relay's atmosphere was as pure as the place making Thimphu experience a unique baton's destination. Generally, while in Bhutan, relay, peace march and dialogues were organized bringing together hundred of Scouts, Rovers and Leaders, gaining a huge media attention. After an adventure filled with cultural vibrancy and deep spirituality, the peace baton left Bhutan and was handed back to India on 20 November 2006.
Bangladesh got hold of the Peace Baton on 24th November 2006 as Scouts and Guides of India handed the baton to them in Benapole – Petrapole border. After Bangladesh, it will go next to Thailand and will proceed to the Philippines as its final stop. As of this date, relays and different activities continue across Bangladesh generally centered on one idea: to highlight the importance of peace.
Route Three
While Scouts and Leaders gathered for the Events Management Workshop in Jeju Island, Korea on 11 October 2006, they have also gotten the chance to see the Peace Baton as Scouts of Japan personally handed it over to Scouts of Korea. After the official hand over ceremony, witnessed by Scouts Leaders at world, regional and national levels, which practically gave more more impact on the arrival and the handover of the baton, the baton started touring Korea making a series of visit to the 19 councils of Korea Scout Association (KSA) attracting the participation of hundred of Rovers and Leaders, showing Korea's deep respect on Scouting on their commitment to maintain peace not only in Korea alone but with the rest of the world.
While in Seoul, the capital city of Korea, Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the National Rover Scout Committee of KSA brought the baton to the National Assembly of Korea. Other personalities who gave their support to the project were Hon. Yoo Jay Kun, President of Korea Scout Parliament Association; Hon. Kim Chong Hoh, Foundation and President Emeritus, World Scout Parliamentary Union and Mr. Lee Won Hee, President of KSA.
After making several stops in Korea, it went to Taiwan on 10 November 2006 and was officially welcomed by the Scouts of China in the opening ceremony of Rover Advanced Training Course and since then it has traveled different places in Taiwan. After Taiwan, its next destination was Macau officially welcoming it on 24 December 2006.
In Macau, several peace-related activities were conducted, creating a celebratory mood on this architectural land. After making a a several rounds in this warm and preserved country, the Peace Baton proceeded to its nearest Asian neighbour, Hong Kong.
In Hong Kong, on the last day of its Metropolitan Jamboree which started from 27 December 2006 to 1 January 2007, held at the heart of this cosmopolitan city in the Asia-Pacific, Mr Pau Shiu-Hung, Chief Commissioner of Scout Association of Hong Kong officially turned over the Peace Baton to the APR representative Theresa Quine who brought the Peace baton to the Philippines.
Official handover of the baton to the region
A grand celebration will be held on the 10th of March 2007, in Manila, Philippines, to be hosted by the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP), to officially handover the Peace Baton to the World Scout Bureau/Asia-Pacific Region culminating the several months-long journey of the baton across the region, sending out Scouts' deep respect and commitment to peace.
At the culmination day of this regionwide event as part of the 50 years of Scouting (Golden Jubilee celebration) in the Asia-Pacific, BSP has lined up different activities to make this first ever major event of the region a festive, remarkable and meaningful as possible, highlighting the 100 years of Scouting to be celebrated this year. An estimated number of over 6,000 Cub Scouts, Rovers and Leaders from BSP will particIpate who will be joined by a number of overseas Scout Leaders, diplomats and dignitaries.
