6th News Update:Rover Peace Baton heads to its final stop
Over 55,000 Scouts from 21 countries including Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Pakistan, Maldives, Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Thailand, Mongolia, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Macau and Hong Kong, have participated since the Rover Peace Baton started traveling the region on August 2006.
See below its different adventures as it continues to visit different countries before heading to the Philippines on March for its grand celebration.
ROUTE ONE
The adventure continues as the Rover Peace Baton went to Singapore after traveling the vast archipelago of Indonesia where it explored different cities and provinces seeing the commitment of Scouts in promoting peace and at the same time enjoyed the wealth of Indonesian culture.
Inside Singapore, the peace baton toured different places of this dominantly modern country with a huge touch of Chinese, Malay and Indian traditions, making every visit of the baton as colorful and as diverse as Scouting. After Singapore, it proceeded to Malaysia on 17 December 2006 at the Second Link. In Malaysia, the peace baton made a visit to Malaysia's 11th National Jamboree where thousands of young people from all over Malaysia, Maldives, Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam, Singapore and Sri Lanka, gathered from 12 to 19 December 2006 in Negeri Sembilan Darul Khusus, Malaysia. The official visit of the peace baton was witnessed by Dr Mohammed Mukhyuddin, Chairman of the APR Scouting Profile Sub Committee and Mr Haji Radzwan Hussain, member of the APR Finance Sub Committee.
Malaysia’s Chief Scout Dato’ Seri Dr Haji Shafie bin Haji Mohd Salleh personally handed over the baton to Brunei on 17 January 2007 where it is expected to travel this tiny oil-rich Islamic sultanate on the northwest coast of Borneo. After a seven-day journey, the baton will proceed to the Philippines where it will be turned over to the Boy Scouts of the Philippines on 24 January 2007.
ROUTE TWO
Bangladesh got hold of the Peace Baton on 24th November 2006 as Scouts and Guides of India handed over the baton at the Benapole – Petrapole border, and since then, a colorful and historical peace baton journey in the land of the longest beach and the largest littoral mangrove forest in the world started. Throughout its stay, Scouts and Leaders worked together in organizing peace rallies in different places receiving tremendous support from the public and from the government.
After Bangladesh, the peace baton proceeded to Thailand and arrived on 9 January 2007. As of this date, the peace baton journey in the Kingdom of Thailand, gathering the participation of Scouts, Rovers and Leaders and drawing the attention of the public effectively sending out its true purpose: promoting the importance of peace. With the kingdom's natural beauty, inspiring temples and Thai people renowned hospitality, the peace baton journey here will surely be as diverse and as vigor like its previous travels in other countries. On 2 February 2007, the peace baton is set to be handed over to the Philippines in Subic Bay, Zambales.
ROUTE THREE
After receiving the baton from Taiwan on 23 December 2006, The Scouts Association of Macau, the peace baton started exploring the several places of Macau, mostly filled with old-style and well-preserved structures. After Macau, it proceeded to Hong Kong, its nearest Asian neighbor, on 29 December 2006 and made a visit to its Metropolitan Jamboree celebrating the 95 years of Scouting In Hong Kong and welcoming the Centenary of Scouting.
The official handover took place during the awarding ceremony of the Jamboree on 1 January 2007, witnessed by 1, 577 Scouts, 295 Rovers and 882 Leaders. In a simple handover, Mr. Pau Shiu-Hung SBS, Chief Commissioner of Scouts Association of Hong Kong officially handed over the baton to an APR representative who brought the baton in the Philippines on 4 January 2007 which is scheduled to be handed over to Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) on 05 February in Cebu City.
Generally, the three batons from three major routes will be handed over to BSP in a separate occasions using the three major points of the country: Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, ensuring a balance nationwide tour of the batons.
The baton from Brunei under Route One will start its journey in Zamboanga City, Mindanao on 03 February, while the one from Thailand under Route Two will start on 02 February in Subic Bay Zambales in Luzon and the baton from Hong Kong under Route Three will start its tour in Cebu City in Visayas on 05 February 2007.
After the official handover, the batons will visit different councils of the 10 Scouting regions of BSP and expected to arrive on 10 March in Manila for its Grand celebration, culminating its regionwide journey in the Asia Pacific.
