United Nations: Ms. Anna Tibaijuka, Director General, UN Office at Nairobi and Regional Director, WOSM – Africa, Ms. Rubina Haroon advocate for peace in Kenya

During a colourful ceremony, Ms. Anna Tibaijuka, Director General, UN Office at Nairobi and Regional Director, WOSM – Africa, Ms. Rubina Haroon inspected a guard of honour mounted by 200 Scouts and Guides at UN Office at Nairobi (UNON), on February 4, 2008.

Ms. Anna Tibaijuka, who is also the UN Under-Secretary General and the Executive Director of UN-HABITAT, had earlier delivered an opening speech on the same occasion.
She told the participants, mostly Scouts and Guides from Kenya: ''As young people, it is your generation which must lead us into a peaceful future. It is your generation which must set a new example for others to follow.'' On the violence in Kenya she reiterated the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon's message of peace to all Kenyans.

Ms. Anna Tibaijuka was in the company of Ms. Rubina M. Haroon, Regional Director for Scouting in Africa, at the opening of the 'Youth Dialogue' whose theme was ' I am Kenya, I am Peace, Let's talk'.

Among many other issues, the forum tackled topics like:

  • The post election violence experiences and looking forward
  • Media and post election violence
  • Youth victims: eye witness account
  • Expert perspectives on the post election violence
  • Dialogue with the United Nations

At around midday, a Peace Garden Assembly was held. During this activity the Scouts and UN staff assembled near the Peace Pole entrance inside the UN complex. A commemorative wreath was laid at the site by the Scouts and the UN staff.

The event was held against the backdrop of the post election violence in Kenya.
