Six African Scout officials attend the 22nd Asia-Pacific Regional Scout Conference in Tokyo
With a view to strengthen partnership between the Africa Region and the Scout Association of Japan, the latter hosted six leaders from Africa from 15th to 26th October 2007. The invitation programme was sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan. The objectives of the program were to observe the 22nd Asia-Pacific Regional Scout Conference in Tokyo, promote international understanding and friendship, enrich Scouting programme and ideas through sharing of information and experiences, and deepen knowledge of Japan's society, culture, economy, nature, etc, through visits in various cities.
The participants were drawn from Africa Regional Office, Rwanda Scout Association and Botswana Scout Association.
At the 22nd Asia-Pacific conference that was attended by about 600 participants(delegates and guests), the participants from Africa had an opportunity to share experiences and build international friendship with other participants of the conference.
The Scout Association of Japan is one of the NSOs bidding to host the 23rd World Scout Jamboree and therefore they took this opportunity to invite the guests from Africa to inspect the proposed jamboree site in Yamaguchi, Japan. Infact, the Africa guests were the only people who had travelled from the farthest to visit this site. Various major events were held in Yamaguchi Kirara Expo Memorial Park composed of a huge Multipurpose Dome and various recreation facilities for both young and adults, nature park, sports The organizing committee, 23rd World Scout Jamboree added that they were in the process of adding more facilities in the park. Peace education is also among the programme proposed for the 23rd WSJ.
The participants also had a chance to visit Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Memorial Park and interacted with children preaching messages of peace. Visit to Kyoto,former capital city of Japan, was also part of the programme. Kyoto is a city with many different temples including the Golden Pavillion, a major tourist attraction.
All the participants were happy with visit that enjoyed every bit of it - warm hospitality of the japanese, trying out various delicacies of japanese foods, the accommodation, beautiful nature of japan, etc.
At the farewell dinner, The Africa Region participants on behalf of the Africa Regional Office expressed gratitude to the Scout Association of Japan and the Ministry of Foreign, Japan for their support to the Africa Region through this generous and kind sponsorship. The host added that they were keen to supporting Africa and looked forward to more Exchange programmes between Africa and Japan.
