Kenya - a seminar on socio-economic challenges facing the youth in Kibera

On the 30th of August 2007, the Regional Director, World Scout Bureau, Africa Regional Office, Ms. Rubina Haroon attended a Seminar at Undugu Informal School, Kibera, Silanga.

The Seminar on Socio-Economic Challenges facing the youth in Kibera was organized under the theme; “Do not Just Engage Us! Support Us” . The event was attended by dignitaries from various organisations, including UN-HABITAT, Kilimanjaro Initiative, UNFCU, KENSUP (Kenya Slum Upgrading Programme), CFK (Carolina for Kibera), Binti Pamoja Project, Kili Initiative and many more. Various topics were discussed including:

  • Enhancing youth participation in local governance;
  • Breaking the cycle of poverty through entrepreneurship;
  • Role of sports, entertainment and recreation;
  • Drugs;
  • HIV and Alcohol – reducing the risk among the youth.

UN-HABITAT and KENSUP have supported the project (upgrading of the sports field) which is a programme of Kilimanjaro Initiative ( http://www.kilimanjaroinitiative.org).
So far, 10 000 USD has been raised for the upgrading of the sports field.
