NIAMEY – In the wake of the destruction of the town of Agadez by floods, 40 Scouts left Niamey, destination: Agadez, with a mission of helping the floods victims. Their response was swift and generous.

 

NAIROBI - In the annals of Scouting in Africa, the period 2005 - 2008 has perhaps been one of the most eventful eras. Whilst there was no shortage of challenges, as you read this report you will be pleased to learn that significant progress was made.

 

 

From 16 to 20 September 2009, a five-day workshop on bio-intensive farming was held at Ezemvelo Nature Reserve in South Africa. Participants came from England, Kenya, Ireland, South Africa, Swaziland, USA and Zimbabwe. Swaziland was represented by members of the Swaziland Scout Association (SSA), Wandile Simelane and Sibonakaliso Mdluli. Simelane is a teacher and Scout leader at Manzana Primary School while Mdluli is a full-time volunteer of the Thirst for Life Scout Initiative.

 

The fourth bi-annual Namibian Scout Jamboree took place between the 26th and 30th of August, 2009 at the Cheetah Conservation Fund outside of Otjiwarongo. For four days, the Jamboree brought together 117 young men and women from 12 to 18 years of age to hike, learn survival and life skills, meet new friends, and share information between Scout groups in the country.

 

Following fully open processes carried out in total collaboration and full agreement with the Africa Regional Scout Committee, Mr Luc Panissod Secretary General of the World Scout Bureau is pleased to inform you that he has appointed: Mr. Frederic Tutu Kama-Kama, from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), as new Regional Director of the World Scout Bureau, Africa Regional Office.

Frederic is 44 years old, married and father of three. He is fully French-English bilingual and fluent in Kiswahili. He has a strong university background, holding a BA and MA in philosophy, a diploma in theological studies as well as a certificate in project management. He is currently completing a Ph.D. focusing on conflict transformation with the California Institute of Integral Studies.

We congratulate Mr Kama-Kama on his recent appointment and look forward to working with him in the future.

OUAGADOUGOU – On the occasion of the celebration of the International Youth Day, Scouts from ASBF (Association of Scouts from Burkina Faso) joined other young people from Burkina Faso in an exercise that saw the plantation of 15000 trees in the Niaré region, near Bissiga, 40 kilometres from Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso.

 

Bulawayo, 12 August 2009 - Hundreds of Scouts from all parts of Zimbabwe gathered at Gordon Scout Park in Matobo, to celebrate the Centenary of Scouting in Zimbabwe. The Camp was officially opened by the Zimbabwe Minister of Education, sport and culture, Mr. David Coltatrt, who praised the movement for its role in the development of young people in Zimbabwe.

 

Mr. Aly Badra L. COULIBALY, the Assistant National Commissioner in charge of Administration and Communication (FIS/EEDCI - Côte d’Ivoire) is taking part in a summer School organized by the International organization of the Francophonie (OIF). The event started on August 8 and will end on August 14, 2009 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

 

The Ghana Scout Association will host the 14th Africa Scout Conference to be held in Accra – Ghana, from Monday 9th to Thursday 12th November (4 days) and the Youth Forum from Wednesday 4th to Friday 6th November. The Conference will be held in Accra and the Youth Forum at the Akosombo Continental Hotel in a resort some 50kms outside Accra.

 

NAIROBI, 9 July 2009 - The Scout fraternity today woke up to the saddest news of the passing of the former Regional Director for the World Scout Bureau, Africa Regional Office. Maj. (Rtd) Kinuthia Murugu passed away at 3.35 am [GMT +3] at Nairobi Hospital. This untimely and shocking demise is the result of an armed carjacking incident that occurred on 19 June 2009.
