The first Messengers of Peace Network training started yesterday in Singapore with an informal dinner hosted by The Singapore Scout Association. This morning an opening ceremony was held to welcome the 60 participants from 35 countries who will be trained over the next three days. The goal of the training is to create online community leaders for the Messengers of Peace Network. The participants of this training will form part of a nucleus of community leaders who will help kick start the momentum for the MoP Global Network. In a tiny town called Toodyay, Samantha Connor of Scouts Australia, recollects “In December 2009, our Scouts were preparing for Jamboree when a bushfire swept through our town. Rover Scouts came to the rescue and posted the alerts on facebook on a group called ‘Toodyay December Bushfire’. One lady said that she found out her house was on fire when she read it on facebook! People fled their homes and it was a miracle that no lives were lost. One of our Scout Leaders, Rob, stayed to fight the fire and saved the two homes adjoining his property. Over five hundred people were evacuated from the area and remained in limbo, not knowing whether they had a home to return to – the Scouts arranged emergency accommodation with mattresses, swags and sleeping bags and put people in touch with each other. Eventually, three days later, people were allowed home to see what was left – there were forty homes lost and over 3000 hectares, including properties, livestock and sheds.” News Subitems :EventsLatest Published ArticlesThe 21st World Scout Jamboree was an amazing experience, made even more special because it took place in 2007 – the Centenary of Scouting. We had the privilege of leading the planning, preparation and organisation of the Jamboree, but there is no doubt in our minds that it was only with the enthusiasm and huge efforts of many others – too numerous to list here – that nearly 30,000 young people had a ‘once in a lifetime’ experience. Since many years scouts and guides enjoy their JOTA-JOTI event. The internet offers exciting new possibilities for JOTA-JOTI. On www.jotajoti.org we implemented a few things like the Weblog and JamPuz (Jampuz Evaluation). Some national organizations implemented very successful ideas, like the “Assignment Game” by the Brazilians or local initiatives like www.joti.tv. Great stuff, but a fraction of the possibilities to make JOTA-JOTI a truly exciting and interactive weekend. With the Program “JOTA-JOTI Vision 2015” we want to jump forward. With this Program (a group of Projects) we want to create global activities for the weekend. Our objective is to make JOTA-JOTI so exciting that 10% of all scouts and guides world wide will participate in the event. That is 3,000,000 scouts and guides in 2015! Events Subitems : |
