Australian Scouts hold workshop on special needs
The first Asia-Pacific Scout Regional Workshop for Children and Youth with Special Needs was held at Baden-Powell Park, Samford from 27th September to 1st October 2006, hosted by Scouts Australia Queensland Branch.
Thirty participants from 13 countries in the Asia Pacific including Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Maldives, Papua and New Guinea, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Australia were in attendance. Fifteen people from across Australia attended.
The workshop commenced during the 26th Queensland Agoonoree where Scouts and Guides invite youth with special needs to share five days of camping and outdoor experiences. This special Scout Camp has always been held here every September since 1980.
Participants shared experiences on gaining greater skills and understanding about working to support people with different needs. It is envisaged that an Australian Scout network is commenced to assist people with special needs in Scouting.
Based on the outcomes of the Workshop, it is hoped that similar training programs will be implemented in the five other Scout Regions – in Africa, in Arab, in Eurasia, in Europe and in Inter America – in the next two years.
