NAIROBI - In its quest to strengthen the capacities of National Scout Organizations (NSOs), five participants from, Angola, Burundi, Ethiopia, Rwanda and Swaziland participated in a month long training, from 27th September to 27th October 2011 in Nairobi, at the Regional Office.
NAIROBI - The Africa Regional Office facilitated Scouts' participation in this year's JOTI whose theme revolved around : ”Peace, Environment and Natural Disasters". In addition to participation from various countries, the Regional headquarters also served as a station from which five Scouts from different primary Schools in Nairobi joined the rest of the world in this annual event.
For almost twenty years, this young man had never known the luxury of a warm blanket or a well-cooked healthy meal. For Dennilson Onsom, life was about sleeping in the cold and eating from the garbage pit of the Kisii town of the western part of Kenya. At one point he even moved to the streets of Nairobi with the hope of a better life, but this bore no fruits resolving to go back to Kisii.
Dear reader, it is my pleasure to welcome you to our inaugural edition of Kudumail. This newsletter will join our array of communication channels in our quest to keep you informed about what’s happening in the Africa Scout Region. This launch coincides with a very opportune period in our calendar, a time when you need to stay abreast with detailed information about four major events that our region is currently preparing. These are: Africa Scout Day (13 March 2012, Angola); 6th Africa Scout Youth Forum (1–4 June 2012, Angola); 15th Africa Scout Conference (6–9 June 2012, Angola) and 6th Africa Scout Jamboree (28 July - 5 August 2012, Burundi).
The Uganda Scout Association celebrated the tenth anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers [IYV+10] by camping for a week at the Uganda National Scouts Camp, Kaazi. The scouts numbering about 3, 900 camped from the 12th to the 17th of August and conducted volunteer activities under the theme “Skills for life a path towards active citizenship”.
The Mauritius Scout Association recently inaugurated its newly refurbished headquarters: the 30-year-old Baden Powell House. The NSO’s building was renovated thanks to the Corporate Social Responsibility programme of the Mauritius Telecom Foundation.
RINKABY - On Saturday July 30, 2011, the staff of the World Scout Bureau, Africa Regional Office in collaboration of the management of the 22 World Scout Jamboree hosted a reception with a view to fundraise for the Africa Scout Foundation and raise awareness about the upcoming regional events.
The long awaited 22nd World Scout Jamboree Sweden 2011 is finally here with the stage being the fields of Rinkaby at Kristianstad in the Southern Sweden. As part of the Scout family, the Africa region has sent a large contingent among them 77 participants and leaders from 31 countries for an experience of a lifetime thanks to Operation One World.
CONAKRY - June 15, 2011, 200 Scouts in partnership with DHL Guinea, were mobilized to plant 3000 in the Kakimbo Forest. Also represented at the function was the Ministry of Environment, some government officials, UNDP, diplomatic corps. The guest of honour was the President of the Republic, His Excellency Alpha Condé. Kakimbo Forest, which once covered more than 200 Acres of land, was classified in 1943 by the colonial administration, now covers only almost 40 Acres due to encroachment by surrounding populations.
NAIROBI – On Monday 20 June 2011, a group of 11 Ugandan Scouts arrived at the World Scout Bureau, Africa Regional Office on bicycles. They left Uganda on Tuesday 14 June 2011. They were on transit to Sweden, in order to be part of the 22nd World Scout Jamboree. “We will fly to Italy. From there, we will cycle through Switzerland, France, Belgium, Germany, Denmark and finally to Sweden”, explained the group leader, John Bosco Balongo.
Food for Life Project (FFL) was recently extended to West Africa (Benin and Niger), following its successes in the East Africa (Burundi, Kenya and Uganda). The dual launch started in Niger on 6th May and continued to Benin on 9th May. The Benin launch took place on 9th May 2011 in the capital city Cotonou, while in Niger the launch took place 6th May 2011 in Niamey. Both launches -- a pioneer phase in the West African zone for the Food for Life project -- were well attended.
“Scouting for a positive change” The countdown begins! About 3000 young people from across the globe have already marked July 28th to August 5th 2012 in their Scout diaries, as the day when they will assemble in Burundi, in Bungere, at the National Training Centre of the Association of the Scouts of Burundi for the 6th Africa Scout Jamboree. A good number of potential participants are already sending their registration forms to Burundi.

Dear colleagues in Scouting and friends of Scouting, it t is with great pleasure that we present this Annual Report 2009-2010 for the Africa Scout Region. 2009-2010 witnessed many highlights and achievements that kept Scouting’s torch burning bright throughout the continent. The most notable of these, of course, was the 13th World Scout Moot that took place in July-August 2010. Ably hosted by the Kenya Scouts Association and admirably supported by the World Scout Bureau’s Central Office and Africa Regional Office, this marked the first time ever that a WOSM-level youth event was held on African soil.
By and large, this report is an account of highlights in the Scout fraternity in Africa. In particular, it presents the work and accomplishments of the Africa Regional Office from 2009 to 2010. Some of the initiatives are ongoing or in the process of development and therefore will receive attention in future reports as well.
South African Scouts mobilised quickly to support over two hundred fire-fighters and conservation staff during this weekend’s devastating wild fires on the Helderberg mountain that saw eleven houses and a hotel burned to the ground.
Scouts, adult leaders and parents from four scout groups in the Helderberg District, Western Cape, South Africa mobilised quickly to support conservation staff and fire fighting personnel during this weekend’s devastating wild fire. After taking the initiative to offer assistance to the Helderberg Nature Reserve, Scout leaders in the district mobilised rapidly to the urgent call for assistance.
Like many Angolans, Pedro Fernandez, a 26-year-old Scout, oozes an aura of patience and stoicism. His buoyant demeanour can almost make you forget that when he was born, a deadly civil war had engulfed his country. Worse still, when he was 3-years-old, what is ostensibly the second largest battle in the history of Africa took place in Angola’s Cuando Cubango province (from January 13 to March 23, 1988). However, later on, all is well that ends well, the 2000s -- in this south-central African country, the second-largest producer of oil in sub-Saharan Africa after Nigeria -- saw the end of a 27-year-long civil war (1975–2002).
The Mauritius Scout Association (MSA) recently held an annual general meeting. During this meeting, the Chief Commissioner, Danielo Ramsamy, presented his report, balance sheet, highlighting several achievements at different levels.
GAUTENG: On the 13th March 2011, Gauteng Scouts participated for the first time in Africa Scout Day. The focus of the event -- held at Delta Park and Delta Park scout Camp -- was on the environment.
If Africa Scout Day were a spacecraft, Burundi 2011, would go down in history as the launch pad that sent this day into the orbit in the skies of the African continent, and perhaps, overseas. When on 10 March 2011, delegations started to flock the Bungere Scout centre in Gitega, Burundi, the herald of a historic occasion filled the atmosphere of the green and hilly environs.
This Sunday 13 March 2011 the 37 African National Scout Organizations (NSOs) will mark Africa Scout Day. The main event will be held in Gitega, Burundi, from 10 to 14 March and it will bring together over 1000 Scouts from various countries, including Angola, which will host next year’s event. The guest of honour will be H.E. Pierre Nkurunziza, the president of Burundi.

It is the 22nd February again and, all over the world, Scouts are celebrating Founder’s Day.
