Gone Home: Shantillall Dhanjee (O.B.E) - Mauritius

Mr Shantillall Dhanjee passed away at the age of 93. He is the founder of the first local Hindu Scout Troop in 1946. He was the first Mauritian to be appointed as Chief Scout of the Mauritius Scout Association (MSA) in 1978 and remained in office for 20 years. Shantillall Dhanjee led a very active life in Mauritian society by being a high calibre educationist, owner and director of the Dhanjee College.

He was also for many years the chairman of the local "Alliance Française" centre and has also been a national inescapable figure in the local world of sports during the 1970s. Mr Dhanjee was the first Mauritian Scout to receive the "Order of the British Empire" (O.B.E.) in the late 1990s for his contribution to social work.

He was also the first Mauritian to be awarded the "Africa Elephant" the highest award for Scouting in Africa
