The Governance Review Task Force met in Geneva in February.
Meeting of the Governance Review Task Force
The Governance Review Task Force (GRTF) has held their first meeting since the appointment of David Bull as Chairman. With all members present, the meeting took place in Geneva on the 10th - 11th February, 2007. The discussions focused on defining the context of the task force's work, reviewing progress so far, and setting specific objectives for the work to be carried out.
Participants talked about different definitions of governance, and a definitive programme of action was mapped out with work categorised under the following headings:
- Legitimacy
- Unity of the Movement
- Accountability and transparency
- Integrity and democracy.
How WOSM governs itself will help determine how it is accepted by the world at large as a legitimate organization with recognised values which are beneficial to society generally. Good governance will also help extend and maintain the unity of the Movement.
For this reason, the task force believes that the governance systems of World Scouting must show integrity and democracy, coupled with accountability and transparency. This is vital for going forward into the 21st century.
Representatives of the task force intend to be present at all the forthcoming Regional Conferences and hope to engage in constructive dialogue with delegates there. However, individual responses from National Scout Organizations (NSOs) will be vital too and therefore all NSOs will soon be asked for input on a number of issues under consideration.
