The funerals of the Scouts and Scout Leader

Grief for our brother Scouts in Colombia

Last Saturday, 18 March 2006 - Ten young Scouts and a Scout Leader were tragically killed in the region of Caldas, Colombia during a freak landslide that was caused by heavy rains in the mountains surrounding their campsite. The regional capital, Manizales, is a popular tourist destination and is nearby the active volcano Nevado del Ruiz, and to where the Scouts were camping when the disaster occurred.

During the hours following the tragedy, the bodies of Leonardo Arango López (13), Luis Felipe Ladino Arango (13), Oscar Andrés Uribe Becerra (13), Jorge Iván Torres Tamayo (14), Juan Manuel Flores Velásquez (14), Johan Sebastián Castrillón Ortiz (14) and Edgar Ricardo Mancera Tabares (23), unit leader, were discovered.

A further four scouts, David Sebastián Villada Chávez, David Grajales Vanegas (11), Juan Camilo Herrera Zambrano (13) Andrés Eduardo Ocampo Llanos (16), were still missing 48 hours after the disaster and only two bodies have since been found.

Thankfully there were three survivors of the tragedy. Juan Pablo Gutiérrez (19) and Juan Pablo Castañeda (16), who were absent from the campsite at the time, and José Manuel Varela (22) who was swept up in the landslide but dragged onto a bridge that sheltered him from sustaining fatal injuries.

More than 12,000 people including Mr. Francisco Andrade, President of the Asociación Scouts de Colombia, Mr. Harold May National Executive Director and other scout authorities were present at the funerals; sharing with other scouts, relatives and friends the feeling of sadness and loss.

The Asociación Scouts de Colombia and especially the members of the affected Scout Group, have received support and solidarity from several NSOs as well as from the Regional and World authorities of the Scout Movement.

On behalf of the World Organization of the Scout Movement we want to express our condolences and affection to all our scout brothers and sisters in Colombia who have been affected by this tragedy and we join in praying that God will grant our scouts eternal peace in the celestial camp.
