Scouting and Street Children
July, 2003 - "Children in Difficult Circumstances" was the subject of a seminar conducted in Nairobi, Kenya by the Africa Scout Region in early June. Twenty-one participants came from Scout organizations in six countries in Eastern Africa. World Scout Bureau executive Dominique Benard helped run the seminar, along with two experts from World Scouting's Ticket to Life Network, created to support the work with children in difficult circumstances.
The costs of the seminar were covered by a grant received from the Schneider Foundation in France.
It focused on the projects developed by these six national associations in working with street children and homeless children, a huge problem in these countries suffering from ethnic wars, AIDS and extreme poverty.
Several former street children, saved by Scouting, attended the seminar and shared their experience with the participants. As a result of the seminar an approach on working with children in especially difficult circumstances through the Scout method was developed. Funding is being sought for these projects.
