European Parliament
On Wednesday, 4th July we had our sixth meeting of European Scouting and members of the European Parliament. Marian Harkin (MEP) hosted the meeting.
The message of the meeting was: Scouting has had a particular commitment to reaching out to marginalised and disadvantaged young people, this is particularly true in our centenary year as demonstrated by Gifts for Peace projects.
As part of the meeting we presented a statement calling on Commissioners Figel’ (Education and Culture) and Špidla (Employment and Social Affairs) to implement further measures for the inclusion of marginalised young people. Sixteen members of the Parliament signed the statement.
This was a well-timed initiative as the Commissioners are about to publish a Communication on youth policy tackling a broad range of issues from employment to health. The lunch meeting on provided WOSM with the opportunity to stress the valuable role Scouting plays in local communities. Our relationship with the European Parliament is ongoing, so if you would like to know how you can get involved, please contact
