2nd Update: Rover Peace Baton Journey continues

JAPAN
Around 40 Venture Scouts and eight Rover Scouts from 40 different prefecture Scout councils in Japan attended the National Scout Forum held in Tokyo on 18 September 2006 where a ceremonial act of peace baton hand-over took place. Aside from the discussion on peace issue, an illustration of a peace tree was presented symbolizing Scouts’ interest and commitment on maintaining it inside and outside Japan. Japan was the first country to receive the baton under Route 3, which also includes Mongolia, South Korea, Republic of China (Taiwan), Macau, Hong Kong and Philippines as its final destination.

After the peace baton was officially received by Mr Shinichi Osaka, Chairman of the National Youth Involvement Committee, it was passed around to the participants.

The baton will be handed over to Korea and it will be officially received on the opening of the APR Events Management Workshop on 11 October 2006, in Jeju Island, Korea.

SRI LANKA
As Scouts of Maldives officially handed over the peace baton to Sri Lanka Scouts, it has started traveling across Sri Lanka and was warmly welcomed by various government leaders.

In Kandy, it was received by Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa who joined the 100 Rovers in welcoming it. On 28 September 2006, it was brought to the Parliament Complex where it was handed over to Hon. Jeevan Kumaratunga, Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs and President of the Parliament of Scout Union.

After a few more stops in different parts of Sri Lanka the peace baton was turned over to Bharat Scouts and Guides of India in Chennai on 2 October 2006.

INDIA

Riding in their motorcycles, around 500 people composed of Scouts and Rovers participated in the peace baton relay which made a stop at the tomb of Mahatma Gandhi, to pay respect to the country's great leader. Gandhi is known as the Father of the Nation and Apostle of Peace.

The 32-kilometers relay was followed by a rally and a cultural program held at the National Headquarters, attended by Chief Guest Choudhary Matin Ahmad, Chairman of the New Delhi Waqf Board and MLA, who hailed Scouts for organizing a project that directly inspires the people in promoting peace.

NEW ZEALAND
After touring around Fiji, the Rover Peace Baton arrived in New Zealand on 12 September 2006 and has gained a lot of support from the government.

Honourable Anand Satyanand, PCNZM Governor-General, Chief Scout and personal representative of Queen Elizabeth II, signed a citation along with the Honourable Nanaia Mahuta, Minister of Youth Affairs, Mr. George Fairbairn, International Commissioner and Mr. David Wallace, National Rover Commissioner, hailing the Scouts throughout the Asia Pacific Region for promoting the values of Scouting.

A special appearance of the peace baton in a gang show where it was passed around among the Rovers has highlighted the visit of the peace baton in New Zealand. Scouts here sent the baton to Nikketah McGrath, Chair of the National Youth Council in Australia who received it on 29 September 2006.
