United Nations Millennium Campaign

The UN Millennium Campaign informs, inspires and encourages people’s involvement and action for the realization of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). An initiative of the United Nations, the Campaign supports citizens’ efforts to hold their government accountable for the Millennium promise.

The objective of the MDGs, which is to liberate people from the crippling conditions of extreme poverty, is particularly relevant to the Scouts, not only because of their interest in child development but also because many of their members currently live in countries hoping to achieve the MDGs. The Scout's interest in the UN Millennium Campaign was officially recognized with the Memorandum of Understanding in 2005.

To specifically support the UN Millennium Campaign, World Scouting launched the “Youth of the World Campaign”, which aims to inform young people of issues of development and encourages them to act in response to the needs of their community. As a part of the campaign, NSOs have been encouraged to develop projects for the senior sections of their organizations in the following areas: peace, security and disarmament, development and the eradication of poverty, and the protection of our common environment.

Last week, over 45 participants representing youth-led organisations, civil society organisations, various agencies of the United Nations, representatives from the private sector and academia, met for two days in New York to coordinate and harmonize their efforts to enhance child and youth participation in the formulation of the agenda that will succeed the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) after 2015. World Scouting was invited as a leading youth-led organization for this key consultation meeting. The meeting – organized by the UN Millennium Campaign in collaboration with the UN Inter-Agency Network on Youth Development, the UN Non-Governmental Liaison Service, CIVICUS, GCAP and the Beyond 2015 campaign – counted the presence of Ms. Amina J. Mohammed, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General (of UN) for Post-2015 Development Planning.

10 Arab and 7 European Scouts have shared their cultures and ideas during 4 days at the Evo Camp, during the Roverway, from 24 to 28 July! Better understanding each other, contributing to the post 2015 Millennium Development Goals process and creating new friendships were the agenda of this Euro-Arab workshop.

Launched by the Millennium Campaign, STAND UP is an innovative and exciting challenge to set an official Guinness World Record - the greatest number of people ever to STAND UP Against Poverty and for the Millennium Development Goals - on October 15-16 2006.
